Meet Gov. Charlie Crist at Bradenton City Hall!

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp will meet personally with residents in cities across the state to talk issues, including a day in the City of Bradenton on May 16.

The “Citizen Hours” meetings were set up through the Governor’s office to allow Florida citizens who might not ever have a chance to interact with the Governor or Lt. Governor an opportunity to have their voices heard. A representative from Citizen Services is in each meeting to document the discussion and provide the appropriate follow up.

The event is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will not be able to register to speak to a particular individual.

Citizens interested in meeting with the Governor or Lt. Governor should arrive at Bradenton City Hall between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday, May 16, for registration. Please use the entrance on Barcarrota Boulevard.

The meetings are set up in five-minute blocks. Citizen Services staff will meet one-by-one with each participant to get a “head-start” on their issue. The Governor will use a private office for the individual meetings.

The Lt. Governor and other state agency heads will meet with citizens that the Governor or the Citizen Services staff send their way.

The Governor is scheduled to depart at 1 p.m.

For more information on the Governor’s visit, please call the Bradenton City Clerk’s office, 941-932-9461.

IMPORTANT NOTICES!

More reports of 'Bank Examiner' scam

The Bradenton Police Department is asking citizens to be cautious of a scam that has occurred in the area recently. Below is a description of the "Bank Examiner" scam.

The con artist calls the potential victim and identifies himself as a police detective, bank examiner or other official title. The scammer says the police or bank is investigating a possible theft or embezzlement at the victim’s bank and they need the victim’s help.

The scammer directs the victim to go to the bank and withdraw a certain amount of money (usually in the thousands). The scammer tells the victim that the bills will be marked because they want to catch the crooked teller in the act.

The victim is told to give the cash to an official who will meet them in the parking lot so they can inspect and record each bill. The scammer claims the money will be re-deposited in the victim’s account. The scammer shows up dressed professionally, takes the victim’s money and disappears.

For more information, please contact Sgt. L.J. Millard at 941-932-9300 ext. 351 or email lori.millard@cityofbradenton.com.

Cortez Road (S.R. 684) Median Project Facts

Project Description
The Florida Department of Transportation has started construction of a 1.8-mile roadway improvement project on Cortez Road from east of 57th Street West to 28th Street West. This portion of Cortez Road is located in the City of Bradenton and Manatee County.

The project includes widening, median construction, median modifications, signalization and signing and pavement markings.

Median modifications will consist of left turn lanes with concrete medians and several median closures. These improvements will alleviate potential safety concerns, therefore reducing traffic accidents.

In addition, one left turn lane will be added at the intersection of Cortez Road and 34th Street West. This turn lane will be for motorists traveling westbound on Cortez Road turning left at 34th Street West.

What to Expect During Construction
Night work: In an effort to avoid disruptions in traffic flow along the project corridor, the contractor is performing roadway construction activities that require a lane closure during the evening.

Lane closures: There will be no lane closures within the project limits between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Speed limit: The current speed limit will be maintained within the construction zone. Speeding fines are doubled in the work zone.
