Pool Maintenance

Chemically treated water from pools, hot tubs, and fountains, containing chlorine, bromine, and salt, can harm local water quality and endanger wildlife when it enters surface waters. While these sources contribute to the problem, residential swimming pools are the primary culprits.

Tips to reduce pollution from your pool:

  • Never drain chlorinated water to the street or storm drain. Allow water to sit in the pool for several days, then test the chlorine level before draining. The chlorine levels should dissipate to less than 0.01 mg/L of chlorine or less.
  • Drain water to vegetated areas such as lawns or gardens. Ensure this does not cause erosion.
  • Particulate filter materials, such as diatomaceous earth, may be raked into landscaped areas or disposed of in the trash.
  • Connecting a discharge pipe from a pool to the City drainage system is illegal.
