Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program

Created in 1974, the Community Development Block Grant is a flexible program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs, including housing. The City of Bradenton is an "entitlement community," receiving a formula-based annual allocation of CDBG funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

HUD awards grants to entitlement cities and community grantees to carry out a wide range of community development activities directed toward revitalizing neighborhoods, making infrastructure improvements, economic development, and providing improved community facilities and services. This grant is another source of funds the city uses for down payment and housing rehabilitation assistance providing a subsidy to the city through these activities.

The primary objective of the CDBG program is to develop viable communities by providing decent, safe housing, a suitable living environment, and expanding economic opportunities, principally for persons of low and moderate incomes. Consistent with this objective, not less than 70% of the City of Bradenton’s CDBG funding shall be used for activities that benefit persons of low and moderate incomes.
