Schedule This position generally works a regular weekday daytime shift but may require unscheduled work outside of normal working hours for damage assessment or other duties

Supervision Received: Reports to the Senior Building Inspection and the Building Official
General Purpose of the Position: The purpose of this position is to perform plan review and field inspections within license categories held. Work requires considerable independent judgment in the interpretation and application of Florida Building Codes and Local Regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Depending on individual qualifications and licensure, is responsible for performance of highly skilled technical work in the review of building,mechanical,electrical and plumbing plans, blueprints,diagrams,surveys,and similar documentation required for building construction,alterations or repairs at residential and commercial job sites for applicable code requirements and State regulations.
- Depending on individual qualifications and licensure as a Standard Inspector, work also includes inspections as needed and directed in the appropriate discipline and other assignments as required to meet the needs of the organization.
- Communicate with contractors, architects, engineers and/or private parties on
- Work and communicate directly with contractors, architects, engineers and/or the general public; explain rules, regulations, acceptable methods, and inspections/permitting procedures with tact and impartiality.
- Draft business letters, when necessary, to contractors, architects, engineers and manufacturers.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Physical Abilities Required:
- Excellent communication skills. Must be team-oriented.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow-up with assignments with minimal direction.
- Knowledge of various construction design methods, materials and building code requirements.
- Knowledge of State laws and regulations governing building construction and local requirements used in building construction and associated work.
- Knowledge of entire permitting process, including intake, review and issuance of building permits.
- Must possess a high level of interpersonal skills relating to customer service.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex construction plans and specifications.
- Ability to enforce and interpret regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, building industry, general public, elected officials, etc.
- This position is in both an indoor and outdoor setting, will be exposed to construction sites and noise, and may have to work in inclement weather. May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- May be required to perform other related work during weather or other extreme emergencies.
- Driving is required for this position.
Computer Equipment and Software Requirements: Computer hardware and software programs,telephone,copy machine,printers,fax machine,calculator,scales, and other office equipment and carpentry tools.Operates a city vehicle.
Education and Experience Required: High School diploma or GED equivalent. Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Florida’s driver’s license. Additionally:
- Possession of Standard Plans Examiner License or/and Standard Inspector in one (1) or more disciplines (Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical) issued by Florida's Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB) as a Plans Examiner or/and Standard Inspector. Additional Licensure as a Standard Inspector or Plans Examiner in one or more disciplines highly desired; or
- The ability to qualify for Provisional Licensure(s) by providing an affidavit (Page 9 Section IX of DBPR Application form DBPR BCAIB 1) signed by a licensed Contractor, Architect, Engineer or Building Code Administrator. The affidavit shall demonstrate and attest to a minimum of five (5) years hands on experience in the category sought. Experience shall be gained as/or under a registered or state-certified contractor; or
- Any other provision for licensure qualification that includes equivalent combinations of education and experience as provided for by Florida Statute 468.609 section 2 item (c) number 2. or 3.
Certification Time Frames: Provisional Licensure(s) required from BCAIB as a Plans Examiner or/and Standard Inspector is required within the first one-hundred and twenty (120) days of employment. Standard licensure(s) required prior to expiration of Provisional License or within one (1) year of employment, whichever comes first.
Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Construction, Engineering or Architecture.
Pay Grade: 117
