Classification: Essential: This position is an Essential classification and will require an employee to report to duty after a hurricane or emergency.

Schedule:
This position normally works are regular week day daytime shift and requires scheduled/unscheduled  overtime, including evenings, weekends and holidays and/or immediate response to emergency conditions.

Supervision Received: Supervisor

General Purpose of the Position:
The purpose of this position is to  operate a large  commercial  rear-load packer truck for assigned collection (garbage) routes.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Check conditions of truck and report needed repairs and services to supervisor.
  • Direct the work of a Solid Waste Worker in proper methods of collection.
  • Activate control to dump containers into the truck.
  • Perform incidental manual labor in conjunction with the loading of waste and/or trash.
  • Make minor field repairs and adjustments to vehicles.
  • Answer citizen/customer questions concerning what can/cannot be hauled.
  • Drive with conformity to State and local driving laws and ordinances.

 

Skills and Physical Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of the hazards associated with the operation of heavy duty automotive equipment and of precautions for the safety of the crew.
  • Must be skilled in the operation of heavy automotive equipment.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • General knowledge of safe work techniques and practices used in solid waste collection.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and decisions appropriate to experience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees and the public.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions,and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions,and decimals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear, reach above shoulders, work overhead on ladders and platforms, use fingers and hands with dexterity, and feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 80 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

 

Equipment Used:
Cellphone, telephone,radio. CDL Class B and Non-CDL vehicles and hand tools. CDL vehicles will be limited to rear-loaders, recycle trucks, and boom trucks. Non-CDL vehicles will include Tom­ Cats and pickups. Safety equipment is provided.

Education and Experience Required: 
A good driving  record,a valid Florida driver's license, a  ClassB Commercial Driver License(CDL) with air brakes endorsement and a high school diploma or OED equivalent. Minimum of 6-months of  experience as a Solid Waste Driver-Trainee with no job-performance issues,or equivalent  experience.

Environmental Conditions:
Work is primarily performed outside in varying and extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time where employees are exposed to excessively loud noises from construction equipment, human debris, drug paraphernalia, and heavy equipment. Physical effort is required to perform heavy manual labor in uncomfortable conditions, climb ladders, bend, reach, and stand for long periods of time. Occasional exposure to slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Subject to 24-hour call back for emergency conditions. Appropriate training and safety equipment will be provided for all conditions.

Commercial Driver License(CDL): A Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with at brake send or sement is required for this position.
