Supervision Received: Sergeant, Criminal Investigation Section or Designee.
General Purpose of the Position: The purpose of this position is to work in the Criminal Investigation Section as a Detective. Personnel assigned to the Criminal Investigation Section shall be responsible for the detection, apprehension and preparation for the prosecution of criminal offenders and the recovery of stolen property.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Detectives shall conduct a follow-up or an original investigation on cases assigned for contact by the respective Sergeant, designee, or Supervisor.
- Detection and arrest of criminal offenders.
- Collection, identification, evaluation, and preservation of evidence in criminal matters.
- Investigation of Cold Case, including but not limited to homicide, missing persons, etc.
- Proper preparation of cases for the Court System.
- Assist active Detectives in long-term investigations.
Skills and Physical Abilities Required:
- Considerable knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances necessary for effective law enforcement, with special emphasis on criminal law, procedure, evidence, pursuit of suspects, and search and seizure law.
- Considerable knowledge of the geography of the City.
- Considerable ability to exercise discretion and to determine the proper course of action.
- Display considerable critical problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to cope with stressful situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
- Ability to obtain and record information through interview, interrogation, and observation.
- Ability to operate vehicles and demonstrate “performance” driving techniques.
- Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Computer Equipment and Software Requirements: Experience with the current software used by the Bradenton Police Department.
Required Qualifications:High school diploma or GED equivalent.Basic Florida Law Enforcement Certification.Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver license. Meet and maintain the “Officers’ Minimum Qualifications” as promulgated in Florida Statute 943.13, to include proficiency with firearms.
Preferred Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college with a degree or 30 credit hours within a degree field. Certified Law Enforcement Officer for eight (8) years or more. Have four (4) or more years of experience in investigating criminal cases, and a working knowledge of Florida policing.
Pay Grade: 122
