City of Bradenton Takes a Significant Step Toward Growth and Connection with Public Works Building Demolition
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 10, 2025
BRADENTON, FL –The City of Bradenton is excited to announce the next step in our ongoing efforts to revitalize and energize our urban core. The demolition of the Public Works building at 1411 9th St. W. marks the beginning of an ambitious project to create City Park, a dynamic space that will connect downtown Bradenton to Village of the Arts and the 9th Street West entertainment district.
This site holds a storied past—it once served as a vital hub for Camp Weatherford during a pivotal time in Bradenton’s history, serving as the “sister” building to the old Palmetto Armory. Mayor Gene Brown and the Bradenton City Council, in collaboration with former Palmetto Mayor Shirley Bryant, current Mayor Dan West, and the Palmetto Board of Commissioners, are committed to preserving the historical significance of the former Bradenton Armory building. Some key elements, including bricks, will be repurposed for use in the renovation of the Palmetto Armory—ensuring that pieces of our shared history remain integral to our community’s future. While we honor the legacy of what once stood here, we are equally proud of the history we are making today. This transformation represents growth, prosperity, and a bold vision for the future of Bradenton.
City Park will enhance LECOM Park with the addition of a third baseball field, expanded parking, and upgraded facilities to host state, regional, and national baseball tournaments. These improvements will drive tourism, generate revenue for local businesses in Bradenton and Manatee County, and further revitalize the downtown area, all while preserving the historical significance of City Park Field, which dates back over a century.
The vision for this project extends beyond sports. Plans include a Community Resource Center, which will offer essential services and support to underserved schools and neighborhoods in our community. The facility will house athletic programs, child and adult education, career development initiatives, and family support services. This partnership with the City of Bradenton, Manatee County Government, School District of Manatee County, and The Manatee Police Athletic League (PAL) represents a rare and transformative opportunity reflecting our commitment to fostering growth, prosperity, and a vibrant quality of life for all who call Bradenton home.
The City Park project represents a significant milestone in Bradenton’s forward-thinking vision. By blending recreation, community resources, and economic development, we are shaping Bradenton into an even more desirable place to live, work, and visit. Together, we are building a city that continues to grow while remaining true to its friendly spirit.
Stay tuned as we take this exciting journey into Bradenton’s future!
